We have opened a new chapter in our history, from the era of confrontation to the beginning of cooperation.” Raila Odinga
“Compromise was necessary for the survival of this country.” Dr Kofi Annan
“We do have a deal.” Dr Kofi Annan on Kenya Mediation Process.
“After four hours of intense negotiations this morning, the negotiating team made almost no progress toward reaching an agreement on governance, despite the fact that they were given the entire weekend to consult on their positions,” “I had to conclude that they were not capable of resolving the outstanding issues.” Dr Kofi Annan on Kenya Mediation Process.
“They thought this was a picnic where they would walk in and take over the government.” Mutula Kilonzo PNU Negotiator
“Listen to me young lady. You have not seen life. I fought as a guerilla and I have been married to two heads of state. Please don’t be a nuisance and understand that we need a political solution not a legal one. We have the goodwill of the Kenyan people and the international community, if we can’t make progress with you we might have to kick you out and the process will continue without you!”
Grace Machel to Martha Karua
“If Kofi Anan is coming, he is not coming at our invitation. We won the elections so we do not see the point for anyone to mediate power-sharing.” John Michuki, Kibaki advisor
It would be really good to know who is suing Kenya when many of those (Anglo Leasing) contracts were with fictitious entities. Perhaps Amos Wako could enlighten us. I think I have commented on this before. People in KANU were the originators of Anglo Leasing back in the 1990s. We in NARC (some now in PNU) took over Anglo Leasing and continues with it. Amos Kimunya has put an interesting spin on the matter though – that the Government realised that there was a problem (Anglo Leasing) and stopped it. In truth, the Government always knew there was a problem and acted on it only when forced to. I was there. It was not as if the Government ‘realised’ something was wrong and took action. The Government knew something was wrong, and its people had to be dragged, pulling and screaming, to do the right thing. I know the facts blow by blow. Kimunya should truthful and admit they were caught with their hands in the till and tried to pull them out when this happened. To do this, however, would implicate some of his colleagues on the (Kibaki) campaign trail.” John Githongo
“I won the presidency and it was stolen from me. Mr Kibaki MUST accept the peoples’ verdict. Kenyans are crying for justice and are looking forward to the day they will get it. It’s hard to negotiate with someone you know very well has stolen a cow from you.” Raila Odinga
“It is important for the President to come out and meet Raila. Kenya is bleeding and people are suffering. Why is Kibaki not ready to meet Raila? After all Raila campaigned for him in 2002 and I believe they can still sit down and talk. What is too difficult for the two to talk about? In 2003, I warned the leaders, that their misunderstandings would lead to something bigger, but they did not listen. I was a lone ranger and now this is the result. I am now urging the international community to put pressure on President Kibaki and his Government, without which innocent Kenyans will continue to suffer.” Wangari Maathai
“Corruption has turned our joys into pains, our dreams into nightmares, our achievements into shame, our heroes into villains, our strengths into liabilities and our hope into despair.” Raila Odinga
“I do not know whether Kibaki won the election.” ECK chairman, Samuel Kivuitu
“We have been consistent – violence does not advance the cause of this country. Violence does not advance the cause of democracy. Violence will not sort out the crisis we have in our country. “And I have been very categorical that violence should not be a part of the solution for the problems we have.” William Ruto
“If I am a traitor for fighting corruption, so be it. I cannot apologise for that. A thief is not a lesser thief just because he comes from your own tribe. Fighting corruption is not treason against one’s community. My fellow Gikuyus will need to come to terms with the fact that the arrogance and corruption of a small group of cynical old men and their sycophants have served to alienate the community from others. On the other hand, ALL communities have to realise that there are truly only two tribes in Kenya – the very small tribe of rich people and the giant tribe of poor people. When things get difficult, the small tribe gets together in board meetings, nyama choma and at golf clubs, to agree on how to sustain the oppression of the poor. Then they go out and lie to the average Kenyan that they are actually divided into small tribal groupings fighting over a national cake that seems finite.” John Githongo
“We did not attain independence to have a country of ten millionaires and ten million beggars.” J.M. Kariuki (RIP)
“The Third Struggle is against an oppressive constitutional order and a greedy, arrogant, callous, tribal and elitist political class.” Raila Odinga, on Christmas Day 2007 at a mammoth rally at Nyayo Stadium
